Jeju  favorite restaurant
Jeju is an island and thus the culinary is mostly consisting of seafood. Instead of cooked dish, Jeju favorite restaurant at the seaside often serves fresh seafood like raw fish. Raw sliced fish or sashimi (in Korean: hwe), is made by slicing a fish that is caught after you order the dish. So the freshness is guaranteed. There are various types of fish you can find in seaside restaurants, some are eaten raw and some are made into a cooked dish. A popular fish dish for Korean people is Mae Un Tang, a spicy fish stew. Aside of fish, seaside restaurants also serve sea snails, clams and abalone in raw. They are eaten with either gochujang (spicy red pepper paste) or special sauce. Abalone or jeonbok, can be made into abalone porridge instead of just eaten raw. Abalone porridge or jeonbok jook is Korean people favorite, with the soft and subtle taste and savory flavor. Aside of seafood, another specialty food from Jeju is heuk dwaeji (Jeju black pork). It is usually served in barbeque style, grilled with additional savory sauce, usually made with myeolchi or anchovy stock.

Jeju-do Women Divers

Those fresh sea products mentioned above, especially for abalone, are not caught by boat but by women in diving suit. They are called hae nyeo (literal meaning: sea woman).Korean female divers are one of several interesting culture we can find in Jeju island. They are expert in diving and have strong stamina. We can spot several hae nyeo at the coast of Jeju when they just caught sea products with net bag placed at their back. If you want restaurant that guarantee you their freshest sea products, you should go to restaurant run by these women divers themselves. You can find one called hae nyeo eui jib (meaning: house of hae nyeo). Hopefully in the next trip you will find your Jeju favorite restaurant.
